When my friend Molly asked me to help with lyrics for a new commissioned piece, I was intrigued. This piece was specially commissioned for a retirement, and the honoree’s favorite passage is Joshua 1:9. The Lord’s words to Joshua as he prepares to enter the promised land are so comforting–“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” What a perfect verse to commemorate a new life season! The lyrics use a journey motif, offering this encouragement from the Lord for all the seasons we encounter on our life’s path. Molly’s gentle, lilting musical setting beautifully conveys the rhythm of walking, and the music climaxes in the moments of greatest comfort: “Do not be afraid, my beloved child. Do not be afraid–I am still your God!”
